Jennia Fredrique Aponte, a visual artist based in Los Angeles, has been perfecting her paper mosaic skills since her childhood days. With a passion for paper and collage, Jennia's mother gave her an exacto knife when she was just 10 years old, which further fueled her love for the art form.With a strong foundation in the arts, Jennia began her journey as a dancer, actor, and filmmaker. Drawing on her background in movement and storytelling, she expertly infuses her love of paper to create collages that are a true reflection of her diverse passions.

Jennia's approach is distinct in that she incorporates dancers into her work, using their artistry to tell stories that transcend beyond the physical realm and challenge viewers to delve deeper into the meaning behind her art. Her passion for paper is evident through her use of unique materials, including Egyptian papyrus and pure gold leaf, that she collects from all over the world. Rather than creating new materials, Jennia takes existing pieces and skillfully transforms them into an innovative art form that speaks to her unique creative vision.

Fresh from a sold-out debut at AKAA in Paris last year, Jennia Fredrique Aponte brings three works from her acclaimed series The Clockwork Academy to Atlanta. Set within a reimagined nineteenth-century academy, the series gives form to histories that may have existed beyond the archive, where Black brilliance reshapes science, invention, and culture while centering ingenuity, beauty, and possibility. Aponte’s masterful mixed-media practice has earned growing recognition, including a recent group exhibition at Sotheby’s Los Angeles and selection as a featured artist in the Los Angeles Lakers’ In the Paint program for two consecutive years.

Artist Statement: Clockwork Academy

In this body of work, I imagine a school that history never recorded but should have: the Clockwork Academy for Girls, founded in 1888 at the height of the Industrial Revolution. I conceived the Academy as a sanctuary for young Black women, protégées of Benjamin Banneker who applied their intellect and creativity to the sciences, the arts, and the mechanics of time itself.

My collages reanimate this imagined institution, drawing on archival aesthetics and layered construction to suggest blueprints, instruments, and inventions. By cutting and assembling fragments of paper from across the world, I echo the resourcefulness of the girls I depict, building telescopes from scraps, charting maps, or designing machines that challenge the very order of their era.

I want to shine a light on the fact that during this period, we were the true artisans of the age- the botanists, the couturiers, the inventors, the craftsmen. Clockwork Academy attempts to make that visible, to insist on our place at the center of invention and imagination where history too often left us in the margins.
