CURITORIAL STATEMENT
For centuries, art has shaped how we see ourselves, understand one another, and remember the people and stories that define our world.
Through the work of Jennia Fredrique Aponte, Eddy Ochieng, Kevin A. Williams, and Jess Owens Young, Art Melanated’s presentation at BUTTER offers a fuller picture: Black life as part of an expansive human continuum.
Across generations and geographies, these works explore Black identity through man and woman, mother and child, youth and elder, the sacred and the everyday. Kevin A. Williams evokes the memory and intimacy of Black American life, while Eddy Ochieng brings a perspective rooted in contemporary Africa. Together, the works reflect a diaspora connected by family, culture, memory, and imagination.
That story carries particular resonance here in Indiana. Jennia Fredrique Aponte’s portrait of Michael Jackson connects two creatives shaped by Gary, while Jess Owens Young’s depictions of Hank Aaron and Connie Morgan honor figures whose histories are intertwined with the Indianapolis Clowns. Together, they illuminate the rich cultural legacy of Indianapolis and the broader story of Black life in Indiana. Their presence alongside portraits of family and everyday life creates a continuum between the people who shape our homes and communities and the cultural icons who shape history.
Drawing from portraiture, religious imagery, family scenes, and cultural mythology, these artists illuminate Black life in its fullness: joyful, tender, powerful, spiritual, stylish, and complex.
We have always been here, creating, loving, building, dreaming, and shaping culture. Across generations and across the diaspora, these works illuminate our enduring place within the human story, forming a continuum of family, identity, legacy, and possibility.
