Ahkeem Shaw

I am a Los Angeles–based visual artist working primarily in black-and-white oil painting, exploring the depth and complexity of Black identity. Before turning fully toward art, I spent eleven years as a track and field athlete, until a career-ending injury led me back to my first love: art. Drawing from my own experiences of resilience, transformation, and healing, I use portraiture as a mirror for reflection, inviting viewers to look inward and consider the emotions they carry.

Duality sits at the center of my practice. My work is shaped by a lifetime of navigating two worlds at once: being Black in predominantly white spaces, being gay within the culture of competitive athletics, and holding sensitivity in a world that often expects Black men to be strong.

Through figurative realism, I honor the emotional and spiritual fullness of Black life, bringing visibility to qualities often reduced, ignored, or misrepresented in dominant narratives. At my core, I believe we are not monolithic by nature, and my work explores the many facets that shape us.
