Devin Wesley (b. 1993) is an oil painter whose work explores how Black men author their identities within a world that has historically sought to define them. Through portraiture, he examines the distance between how we’re perceived by others and how we see ourselves.

Central to Wesley’s practice is the understanding that personal expression has always reflected the social and cultural conditions of its time. He explores how style and adornment allow Black men to assert their individuality while offering a sense of protection as they navigate the pressures of contemporary life. Through his black-and-white palette and the interplay of light and shadow, Wesley reveals the complexity of his subjects, challenging monolithic representations of Black life.

Beyond the canvas, Wesley's practice extends into social impact. He has collaborated with Pressed Juicery, Pattern Beauty, Adobe, YouTube Originals, and BET on projects addressing racial equity and mental wellness. His work has been presented in curated exhibitions including Frieze Los Angeles (2024) and the Butter Art Fair (2025). In 2026, he was named Art Melanated's Emerging Artist and received an Advocacy Award from the NAACP Orange County.

Devin Wesley is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores Black identity, masculinity, style, and self-determination. In this series, Wesley pays homage to three defining eras of fashion and the role Black men played in shaping them, reflecting the distinct cultural identity and social conditions of each period. His portraits consider fashion as more than personal style, but as a language through which Black men have asserted identity, resistance, and belonging.

Winner of Art Melanated’s inaugural SAVAGE Emerging Artist Competition, Wesley was recently recognized by the NAACP Orange County with its Advocacy Award.

Artist Statement:

This series pays homage to three defining eras of fashion through the lens of Black men. Across generations, Black men have used style and personal expression to assert identity and humanity in spaces that have often sought to define them otherwise. Each portrait highlights a distinct era, revealing how fashion served as a form of resistance and empowerment.

  • 'The Dandy' honors the tradition of Black dandyism, where elegance became an act of resistance. Following emancipation, impeccable tailoring and style became a powerful tool for Black men to challenge stereotypes and how society perceived them. His clothing is more than fashion; it is a declaration of self-worth and dignity.

  • 'The Revolutionary' draws inspiration from the visual identity of the Black Panther Party. Their signature uniform became a powerful symbol of unity and resistance. They used style to project strength and resistence. The portrait honors a generation of Black men who understood that how they presented themselves could itself become a political statement, demonstrating that style can function as both armor and a declaration of community.

  • 'The Visionary' celebrates the emergence of early hip-hop and the profound influence Black creatives had (and continue to have) on global culture. Inspired by pioneers such as Run-D.M.C., whose groundbreaking partnership with Adidas following the success of their song, 'My Adidas', redefined the relationship between music, fashion and commerce. The portrait honors a generation that proved authenticity could shape mainstream taste while creating lasting cultural and economic value.
