In First Trip to the Museum, two young sisters stand hand in hand before a towering Rothko, bathed in orange and yellow. With their backs turned to us, they become both observers and the observed. They are blank canvases in posture, yet rich with story in the details of their dresses. Through intricate layers of collage, their garments reveal the beauty, complexity, and emotional depth already embedded in their short lives.
This piece is both a memory and a wish—a tribute to the transformative power of art institutions and the lives they touch. Museums changed my life. They opened doors I didn’t know existed, revealing not just paintings, but possibilities. First Trip to the Museum is a love letter to that first spark of wonder. It's a visual prayer that every child—especially Black and brown children—might know the magic of being seen, inspired, and forever altered by art.
In First Recital, the two sisters prepare for a moment they’ll never forget. Caught in the quiet breath before the curtain rises, they stand side by side so eager, nervous, and filled with wonder. Their dresses, lovingly made by their mother, inside the dresses are storybooks woven from dreams, layered with surreal landscapes and alternate worlds.
Each detail tells a story of imagination, of the wild places children go in their minds to find courage. This piece is a celebration of that first leap into the unknown—of showing up, heart pounding, to be seen and heard. It honors the magic that happens when children step into their own light, carrying the love and creativity of those who came before them.
